Sales of Lexus hybrid SUVs have boosted overall sales figures for the luxury SUV market, according to official VFACTS figures for May released today.
Lexus RX sales – which include Australia’s only hybrid SUV, the RX 400h – led the luxury SUV segment with 228 sales, 34 units ahead of its nearest competitor.
VFACTS figures also revealed that private purchases of hybrid SUVs rose by 75 per cent, while non-private hybrid SUV sales rose by almost 52 per cent for May over April.
Lexus returned strong across-the-board sales of 605 for the marque in May, boosting the overall industry increase of 17.9 per cent over the previous month.
Lexus Australia chief executive John Roca said that the results reflected market demands for efficient and practical motoring.
“May sales results, particularly for RX 400h, demonstrate increased interest in hybrid vehicles, as consumers look for solutions to their motoring and financial needs,” he said.
“Overall Lexus sales for May benefited from the government’s business tax breaks and our retail campaign, called L’Exhibition.
“Demand for all-new RX 350 also spiked in May, despite its exclusion from the retail offer, with the new model exhausting stock allocation for the month.
“We also anticipate greater RX sales in the coming year, accelerated by the arrival of the all-new RX 450h model, our second generation hybrid, in June,” Mr Roca said.
“Lexus hybrid SUVs led our sales results for May, but our overall result has affirmed the business decisions we made earlier this year.
“Early this year, Lexus took the decision to concentrate on managing our stock to meet market demands, while protecting trade-in prices for existing customers.
“In 2009 Lexus will continue to responsibly manage its business and stock to ensure it responds to market conditions quickly and efficiently.
“Importantly, Lexus hybrids offer the ideal mix of power and fuel economy, saving consumers money on running costs without sacrificing power or practicality,” Mr Roca said.
